5E Lesson Plan: Graphing Shapes
Subject area / course / grade level: Math/ Shapes/ Pre-K – Graphing found shapes around the classroom
Materials: tally sheet for circles, squares, triangles; 1 in squared graph paper; 1 in colored circles, squares, triangles; glue
TEKS/SEs: Texas Prekindergarten Guidelines
Lesson objective(s):
Differentiation strategies to meet diverse learner needs:
Teacher can draw height of each bar graph that matches tally amount so learner can simply color in or match his/her shapes to the correct height.
ENGAGEMENT
· Teacher shows video clip from here about finding circles, squares, and triangles everywhere -- http://youtu.be/dsR0h50BiFQ
· Now we will be shape detectives and find shapes in our classroom.
· “Ready to find shapes?”
EXPLORATION
· TLW look for various shapes around the classroom to identify circles, squares, and triangles.
· TLW mark found shapes with tally marks on tally sheet.
· TLW construct a bar graph using 1” shapes glued to graph paper squares.
EXPLANATION
· TLW explain the various characteristics of the shapes and how we can find then in objects around the room.
ELABORATION
· What is the purpose of this bar graph? It shows us a picture of the amount of shapes in our room. Each line of shapes represents the number of those shapes that we found in our class.
· Can we use bar graphs to show other kinds of information? Examples?
EVALUATION
· Teacher will ensure that children are matching their tally mark findings into graph form.

Lesson objective(s):
- TLW identify the characteristics of circles, squares, and triangles.
- TLW give examples of these shapes found in the classroom and mark findings on tally sheet.
- TLW construct a bar graph showing the amount of various shapes around the classroom.
